Veteran Discount Program
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is waiving charges on several Texas toll roads for disabled vets and recipients of the Purple Heart or Medal of Honor who display a specialty license plate.
What is the Texas Department of Transportation's (TxDOT) veteran toll waiver program?
Starting January 1, 2013, disabled veterans and recipients of the Purple Heart or Medal of Honor may drive free of charge on TxDOT toll roads. Veterans must be in a vehicle registered with the
State of Texas and displaying a disabled veteran, Purple Heart, or Medal of Honor specialty license plate for tolls to be waived.
Am I eligible for the veteran toll waiver program?
For the toll charges to be waived, eligible veterans must be in a vehicle registered with the State of Texas and displaying a disabled veteran,
Purple Heart, or Medal of Honor specialty license plate. To find out if you are eligible for one of the specialty plates,

When does the veteran program go into effect?
Tolls will be waived for eligible veterans starting January 1, 2013.
Which toll roads are included in TxDOT's veteran toll waiver program?
In the Austin area, eligible veterans will be able to drive free of charge on Loop 1, SH 45 North, SH 45 Southeast and SH 130 (Segments 1-4) from I-35, North of Georgetown to US 183 South of
Austin. Also, eligible veterans will be able to travel free of charge on the Camino Colombia toll road, which is SH 255 near Laredo, SH 99 (Segment I-2) from I-10 south to Fisher Road, near
Baytown and Loop 49 in Tyler.
(Please note: The southern segments of SH 130 - Segments 5 & 6, from US 183 South of Austin to I-10 near Seguin - are not included in the veteran
toll waiver program.)

Do I need a TxTag to be eligible for the veteran toll waiver program?
No. A TxTag is not required. When driving on the toll roads, your vehicle will be identified by your disabled veteran, Purple Heart, or Medal of Honor specialty license plate.
How do I participate in the veteran toll waiver program?
Eligible veterans with a disabled veteran, Purple Heart, or Medal of Honor specialty license plate issued by the State of Texas will automatically have toll charges waived on TxDOT
toll roads. You do not need to sign up or enroll to receive the discount. If your vehicle's license plate is not correctly identified by the tolling equipment and you are charged for your tolls,
contact the TxTag Customer Service Center at 1-888-468-9824.
Are there certain toll lanes I must use?
No. Eligible vehicles included in the Veteran Discount Program may use any toll lane. Toll equipment will identify your disabled veteran, Purple Heart, or
Medal of Honor specialty license plate.
If I used a TxDOT toll road prior to January 1, 2013, do I have to pay those tolls?
Yes. All charges related to travel on TxDOT toll roads before the effective date of the veteran toll waiver program must be paid in full. This includes any toll charges, administrative fees,
or violation fees associated with tolls owed prior to January 1 – even if a bill or violation notice is not issued until after the veteran program is in effect.
What if I'm a veteran but do not have a qualifying veteran's license plate?
Tolls will only be waived for vehicles displaying a disabled veteran, Purple Heart, or Medal of Honor specialty license plate.
What are the requirements to qualify for a disabled veteran license plate?
Veterans can apply for the specialty license plate if they are certified by the Veterans Administration to have a 50 percent service-related disability, or 40 percent due to amputation of
a lower extremity. Details about how to apply for the plates are available at the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles website.
What if I have multiple cars? What about my spouse's car?
You must be in a vehicle with an eligible specialty license plate for toll charges to be waived.
Eligibility in the veteran toll waiver program is limited to vehicles which are registered with the State of Texas and displaying a disabled veteran, Purple Heart, or Medal of Honor specialty
license plate, per Texas Transportation Code §372.053.
Why is TxDOT waiving toll charges for select veterans?
To support veterans for their service and sacrifice, TxDOT will provide free use of its toll roads and make getting around Texas easier for disabled veterans as well as Purple Heart and Medal
of Honor recipients. Texas Transportation Code §372.053, adopted by the State of Texas during the 2009 Texas Legislative Session, authorizes TxDOT to offer discounted or free tolls to select veterans.
