Using Your TxTag

What can I expect when traveling on the toll roads?
Toll roads have Express Lanes and, if cash is accepted, Toll Plaza Lanes.

Note: Beginning January 1, 2013, TxDOT toll roads no longer accept cash as a method of payment on the road.

Express Lanes: Express toll lanes in Texas accept TxTag. Devices above the lanes send an electronic signal to the microchip in your TxTag and deduct the toll from your prepaid TxTag account. Express lanes look like regular lanes on a highway and allow drivers to maintain highway speeds while paying the toll electronically. These lanes do not have toll booths, coin machines or toll lane lights.

Toll Plaza Lanes: These lanes are for vehicles without toll tags and have toll booths or coin machines. They can be found at mainline plazas or ramps. Drivers with toll accounts may use these lanes, though everyone is required to slow down in toll plaza lanes whether or not they have a toll tag.

You may use your TxTag on toll roads throughout Texas. Just look for the TxTag logo or the following symbols:

To ensure that you are always charged correctly for your tolls, please keep your account and license plate information up-to-date. Also, see the License and Use Agreement to determine the amount of money you will need in your TxTag account in order to use your tag on toll roads throughout the state.

In the future, your TxTag may be used to pay fees for crossing international bridges and for parking at airports and garages, but these options are not currently available.
